This soon century old rya pile rug was hand knotted in Sweden in 1935 by a young Anna-Greta Sjöqvist, who was to become a well known textile designer in her own right. The specific design in this instance, a pair of stylised tulips in the Finnish ryijy tradition, was created by Finnish designer Katri Warén-Varis in 1933. It is a fine example of the young nation’s artistic and creative movement to assert a unique identity with one leg in the ancient Kalevala mythos, and the other in the machine age — all in the shadow of the vast Soviet Union. The beautiful piece of textile art with its deep soft pile will work just as well on the wall as on the floor, and the gently earth coloured, natural palette will bring a sense of peace, harmony and mindful serenity to any space.

All of our pieces are original, well travelled in time and space, sometimes from hand to hand more than once. As we find the ensuing patina part of the charm, we strive to bring the objects back to a new cycle of use as gently as possible making only minor, non intrusive alterations such as for instance replacing electric components where needed in lighting, or reupholstering a chair when the fabric is too frayed but the underlying structure beautiful.
